Marine Engine Technician

What. A marine engine technician keeps boats moving: outboards, inboards, sterndrives, diesels, and the fuel, cooling and electrical systems that serve them. At sea there is no roadside assistance.

Tools. Compression tester, multimeter, diagnostic laptop, torque wrench, flywheel puller, prop wrench, flush muffs, feeler gauges, the service manual.

A day. Winterize or commission. Change lower-unit oil and look for water in it. Replace an impeller before it fails. Read fault codes. Rig a new outboard: controls, steering, gauges, fuel. Sea-trial it.

Pay. Roughly $38k entry to $70k experienced; factory-certified and diesel technicians more.

Path. Universal core → engine principles → two- and four-stroke outboards → lower units → fuel and electrical → diesel → rigging. Credentials: ABYC Marine Engine, Yamaha/Mercury factory certifications.
