HVAC Technician

What. An HVAC/R technician installs and repairs the systems that heat, cool, ventilate and refrigerate. Without them there is no summer office, no hospital, no data center, no frozen food.

Tools. Manifold gauges, vacuum pump, recovery machine, multimeter, clamp meter, brazing torch, nitrogen, leak detector, thermometer, the wiring diagram.

A day. Take a service call. Measure pressures and temperatures. Read superheat and subcooling. Find the failed capacitor or the refrigerant leak. Recover refrigerant legally, repair, evacuate, recharge, verify.

Pay. Roughly $40k entry to $75k experienced; commercial and controls technicians earn more.

Path. Universal core → electrical basics → refrigeration cycle → heating → air distribution → commercial systems → controls. Credentials: EPA 608 Universal, NATE, HVAC Excellence, NCCER HVAC.
