Carpenter

What. A carpenter builds the wooden and framed parts of a building: forms for concrete, the frame, the roof, the stairs, the doors, the trim. Rough carpenters make it stand; finish carpenters make it true.

Tools. Framing hammer and nail gun, circular saw, speed square and framing square, chalk line, level, tape, pry bar, the print.

A day. Snap lines on the slab. Cut the plates. Lay out studs at 16 inches on center. Frame the wall flat, stand it, plumb it, brace it. Set the joists. Sheathe. Check square with the 3-4-5 rule before anyone else notices.

Pay. Roughly $40k entry to $70k experienced; foremen and superintendents more.
