Women in the Trades

The chart. Share of women, by field, drawn as rows of hard hats.

Construction industry overall: about 1 in 9 workers is a woman, most in office, management and design roles.

On the tools: in the building trades themselves, women hold only a few percent of jobs.

Other programs: cosmetology, nursing and dental assisting are mostly women; the trades gap runs both ways.

Why it is changing. Pre-apprenticeship programs, union and employer recruiting, better-fitting protective equipment, and mentors.

The question for the visitor. What would make a trade feel open to someone who has never seen a person like them doing it?
