The Outboard Motor
An engine you can carry to the boat and clamp on the stern.
Early 1900s. Several inventors try; Ole Evinrude of Milwaukee succeeds commercially, selling outboards from about 1909.
Two-stroke era. Light and simple, but oily and smoky. Outboards power fishing skiffs, runabouts and the growth of weekend boating.
Power grows. Multi-cylinder engines, electric start, power trim, remote controls.
Four-strokes and injection. Emissions rules from the late 1990s push cleaner, quieter, fuel-injected engines.
Today. Outboards of several hundred horsepower, digital controls, and battery-electric outboards for small boats.
