STCW: Trained to Go to Sea — panel art

A ship is a small town far from help. Every crew member must be able to save it.

1978. The International Maritime Organization adopts STCW: the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.

1995 and 2010. Major revisions (the 2010 Manila Amendments) tighten training, rest-hour and medical rules.

Basic Training. Four parts every seafarer takes: personal survival techniques; fire prevention and firefighting; elementary first aid; personal safety and social responsibilities.

In the U.S. The Coast Guard issues the Merchant Mariner Credential with STCW endorsements.

Then. Able Seaman, QMED, officer licenses, each with sea time and exams.

Try it. Put on the immersion suit in under two minutes. Then climb into the lifeboat behind you.
