From Groundbreaking to First Guest

1. Survey. The surveyor stakes the lot; the geotechnical driller samples the soil.
2. Ground. Heavy-equipment operators excavate; carpenters build forms; the 3 a.m. pour sets the foundation.
3. Frame. Ironworkers or form crews take it up floor by floor; the tower crane lifts everything.
4. Skin. Glaziers hang the curtain wall; roofers seal the top.
5. Systems. Electricians, plumbers, HVAC and elevator mechanics fill the walls and shafts.
6. Finish. Drywall, paint, tile, millwork, carpet; the upholsterer covers the lobby chairs.
7. Inspection. The building inspector signs the certificate of occupancy.
8. Pre-opening. Housekeepers make 300 beds; cooks test the menu; front-desk agents rehearse check-in.
9. First guest. A key card, a clean room, a working shower, dinner on time.
