1. The call. A 911 dispatcher answers, locates the caller, asks the scripted questions and starts CPR instructions by phone.
2. Dispatch. The nearest ambulance and fire engine are sent; the clock is running.
3. On scene. EMTs and paramedics assess, treat, lift and load.
4. Transport. The ambulance driver drives; the paramedic works in the back; the radio tells the hospital what is coming.
5. The door. A triage nurse decides who is seen first.
6. The room. Nurses, a physician, a respiratory therapist, a radiologic technologist, a phlebotomist.
7. Behind the walls. Sterile processing techs clean the instruments; a pharmacy tech fills the order; a medical coder turns the visit into a bill.
