The Level

Water finds level. Every level is a way to borrow that fact.

Egypt. An A-frame with a plumb bob hanging from the apex: when the string crosses the mark, the base is level.

Rome. The chorobates, a six-meter table with a water channel on top, levels aqueducts that fall a few inches per mile.

1661. Melchisédech Thévenot describes the spirit level: a sealed tube, a liquid, a bubble.

The carpenter's level. Wood, then aluminum, with vials for level and plumb.

The builder's level and transit. A telescope on a tripod carries level across a whole site.

Today. Rotating lasers paint a level line around a room; machine control uses it to grade a site to the inch.

Try it. Check the museum floor with four levels, from the water tube to the laser. Do they agree?
