Paul Revere, Coppersmith

1734–1818 · Boston. Silversmith, engraver, dentist, bell caster, and remembered for one night's ride.

The shop. Revere's workshop made teapots, spoons and engraved plates; he cast church bells and brass cannon.

The mill. In 1801 he opened one of the first copper rolling mills in the United States, in Canton, Massachusetts, rolling sheet copper that had been imported from Britain.

The work. Copper sheathing for the hull of USS Constitution; copper for the dome of the Massachusetts State House.

The trade. Metalworkers turn raw metal into useful shapes by heat, hammer and roller. Gallery G3 carries the story forward to the welder.
