Mary Seacole, Nurse
1805–1881 · Kingston, Jamaica. Learned Creole medicine from her mother, who kept a boarding house for invalid soldiers.
The practice. She nursed cholera and yellow-fever patients in Jamaica and Panama.
The war. When the Crimean War began, she asked to join the British nursing service and was turned down. She travelled at her own expense and, in 1855, opened the British Hotel near Balaclava: food, supplies and care for soldiers, and nursing on the edge of battlefields.
The memoir. *Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands* (1857).
