Elevator: the Vertical Railway

Before 1853 nobody rented the sixth floor. The stairs made height a penalty.

Otis. Elisha Otis stood on a hoist platform at the New York Crystal Palace, cut the rope, and did not fall: a spring-loaded pawl caught the guide rails. The safety elevator turned the top floor from the cheapest to the most expensive.

The machine. A car, a counterweight, hoist ropes over a traction sheave, a machine room or a machine-room-less drive, a controller that decides who is picked up first. Hydraulic elevators push from below for low-rise; traction elevators hang for everything tall.

The rule. ASME A17.1, the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, and a state inspector every year.

The trade. Elevator mechanics are among the best-paid construction workers ($70k–$135k) and almost all of them are trained through the union apprenticeship (NEIEP/IUEC). VoTechWorks runs the pre-apprentice program.

The math. A tower's core is sized by elevators: too few and tenants leave; too many and rentable floor area disappears. The vertical railway is the tower's circulatory system.
