Objective. Students will attach, overlay, bind, and manage external reference files to assemble a multi-discipline drawing set representing a marine machinery space layout.
This lesson, its worked examples and its practice questions has not yet been verified by a licensed engineer or certified journey-level tradesperson or by a certification or approval body. It is a study draft and may contain errors. Do not use it as instructions for work on a job site or on live equipment. Always follow your instructor, your supervising professional, and current official references and regulations.
VoTechWorks program approval and accreditation are still in progress. Credentials are issued only by the certifying bodies named in each program, after their own exams.
In professional drafting practice, a finished drawing set is rarely built inside a single DWG file. Instead, discipline-specific drawings — structural grids, equipment outlines, piping schematics — are created and maintained separately, then assembled into a master sheet using external references (xrefs). This workflow keeps file sizes manageable, allows multiple drafters to work in parallel, and ensures that a change made to a source file is reflected everywhere it is referenced.
An xref is a DWG (or DXF, DWF, PDF, image, or point cloud) file that is linked into a host drawing. AutoCAD displays the referenced geometry inside the host without embedding a permanent copy. The source file remains separate on disk. When the source is updated and the host drawing is reopened — or the xref is reloaded — the host reflects the latest version automatically.
Xrefs are inserted through the External References palette (type `XREF` or use the Insert tab → Reference panel). You can also attach from the Attach button inside the palette.
AutoCAD offers two reference types:
For a marine machinery space, choose Overlay when assembling structural, machinery, and piping files into a master sheet. This prevents one discipline's reference from appearing unexpectedly inside another discipline's file.
Each xref brings its layers into the host drawing with the prefix `xrefname|layername` (for example, `STRUCT|A-GRID`). You can freeze, thaw, turn on, or turn off these layers in the host independently of the source file, using the Layer Properties Manager. This allows a piping drafter to suppress structural layer clutter without editing the structural file.
Do not use the `ERASE` command on an xref; erase only removes the insertion instance from the current viewport, not the reference definition. Use Detach from the External References palette for a complete removal.
At project completion or when transmitting a drawing set to a client who may not have access to your server, you can bind an xref to permanently embed it into the host:
Choose Bind for formal engineering archives. Choose Insert for simplified contractor or fabrication deliverables where a clean layer list matters more than traceability.
AutoCAD stores xref paths as either absolute (full drive path) or relative (path relative to the host file's location). Relative paths are strongly preferred on shared network projects because the drawing set moves as a unit. An unresolved xref appears with a broken-chain icon in the External References palette. To fix it, right-click the entry and choose Change Path Type or Browse to the new file location.
Always keep all DWG files in the same project folder (or a well-defined subfolder structure) before sharing or archiving. When transmitting files electronically, use ETRANSMIT to bundle the host and all xref source files automatically.
The Sheet Set Manager (`SSM` command) organizes individual layout tabs from multiple DWG files into a numbered, titled set. For this lab you will:
1. Create a new sheet set and add your master layout and one detail layout.
2. Use sheet set fields to autofill `Sheet Number` and `Sheet Title` attributes in the title block — these update automatically when sheets are renumbered.
3. Publish the entire set to a multi-page PDF using the Publish function inside the Sheet Set Manager.
Publishing to PDF requires a PDF plotter driver (AutoCAD's built-in `DWG To PDF.pc3` is suitable). Always preview the page setup before publishing to confirm paper size and plot scale.
Although this is a software lab, data discipline is a genuine professional safety issue in manufacturing and marine environments. An outdated or unresolved structural reference in a machinery space drawing can lead to fabrication errors or equipment placement conflicts with real physical consequences aboard a vessel. Always:
Answer each question, then check it. Nothing is recorded; this is your own practice.

Does the school offer financial aid?
No. We don’t offer financial aid because we’re free. No, really: completely free.
Do you offer industry certification?
No. We are not certified yet, so we can’t offer that to students. What we do offer is knowledge and understanding of a trade.
Enroll first in the trade you’re interested in. You get your key, your program opens, and you begin studying.
