Objective. Students will complete a full simulated salon-week scenario integrating scheduling, client records, retail sales, financial tracking, and ethical decision-making, then review all NIC-aligned business and professional-practices content areas in preparation for the state licensing exam.
This lesson, its worked examples and its practice questions has not yet been verified by a licensed clinician in the field or by a certification or approval body. It is a study draft and may contain errors. Do not use it to make decisions about any patient or medication. Always follow your instructor, your supervising professional, and current official references and regulations.
VoTechWorks program approval and accreditation are still in progress. Credentials are issued only by the certifying bodies named in each program, after their own exams.
Everything you have studied in this program—chemistry, anatomy, client communication, sanitation, and business operations—connects at the moment you open your chair for business. This final practice lesson pulls those threads together through a simulated salon week and a targeted review of the business and professional-practices content areas tested on the state cosmetology licensing exam. Passing that exam is not optional: practicing cosmetology without a valid state license is illegal, regardless of your skill level.
During the two-day simulation you will manage a fictional salon workday from open to close. Your responsibilities mirror real entry-level professional duties:
Scheduling and appointment management. You maintain an appointment grid for eight pre-booked clients and two walk-in inquiries. Double-booking, late arrivals, and service-time overruns are common surprises. The professional response is calm, transparent communication with every client affected—never overpromise a wait time.
Client records. Each client requires a completed record that includes services rendered, products used, any known sensitivities or contraindications, and the client's signature where required. Accurate records protect the client and protect you legally. A record left incomplete is a liability.
Retail sales. You process retail transactions using sales tickets that capture product name, quantity, price, applicable tax, and payment method. Recommending retail products is a professional skill and a significant part of salon revenue—but recommendations must be honest and within your scope of knowledge.
Daily revenue report. At close you total service revenue, retail revenue, and any discounts or voids, then reconcile against payment methods received. Math errors in the revenue report are the most common failure point in this exercise. Work carefully, check your arithmetic twice, and use the reconciliation column on the form.
Ethics scenario. One scenario will involve an ethical decision—for example, a client asking you to perform a service that is outside your scope of practice, a situation involving client confidentiality, or a pricing dispute. The correct framework is always: identify the issue, apply the relevant professional or legal standard, act in the client's best interest, and document what occurred.
Your instructor will introduce unplanned events to test how you respond under pressure. Common scenarios include a product shortage mid-service, a double-booking error discovered after a client is already seated, or a scope-of-practice question (for example, a client presenting with a scalp condition that may require medical attention). For scope-of-practice situations, the correct answer is always to refer the client to an appropriate healthcare provider and document the referral—not to diagnose or treat.
The National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) publishes a candidate information bulletin that describes the content domains covered on its written and practical examinations. The business and professional-practices portion of the written exam addresses areas such as:
Always use the version of the NIC candidate information bulletin that is current at the time you register. Exam content outlines are updated periodically.
After the simulation, you will complete a timed 40-question multiple-choice practice exam drawn from the business and professional-practices domains. Treat it as a real exam: read every option before choosing, eliminate obvious distractors, and flag items you are unsure of to revisit. When you self-score, map each missed item to the lesson in which it was taught. This mapping is not punitive—it is diagnostic. It tells you exactly where to focus your remaining study time.
The final activity is a one-page personal study guide. Using your practice-exam results, identify your five weakest content areas and write a specific review action for each—for example, "re-read the sanitation log section and complete the end-of-chapter questions" or "practice three more daily revenue report calculations using the blank forms." Vague plans do not produce results. Specific, time-bound actions do. This guide is required for completion credit regardless of your practice-exam score.
Your daily revenue report must be mathematically accurate to at least 90 percent. All eight client records must be complete. The ethics scenario must be resolved appropriately. Your practice-exam score is recorded as a formative indicator only—it does not affect your grade. What matters is that you use it honestly to direct your final preparation before the state licensing exam.
Answer each question, then check it. Nothing is recorded; this is your own practice.

Does the school offer financial aid?
No. We don’t offer financial aid because we’re free. No, really: completely free.
Do you offer industry certification?
No. We are not certified yet, so we can’t offer that to students. What we do offer is knowledge and understanding of a trade.
Enroll first in the trade you’re interested in. You get your key, your program opens, and you begin studying.
