Full Integrated Mock Certification Exam Day: FANUC CERT, Siemens SMSCP L1, and PMMI Mechatronics
Objective. Under timed, exam-day conditions students will achieve a passing score on a full integrated written mock exam spanning all three credential families and complete a FANUC CERT performance mock without critical errors, then use a scored debrief to finalize their personal exam strategy.
⚠ Pending professional review
This lesson, its worked examples and its practice questions has not yet been verified by a licensed engineer or certified journey-level tradesperson or by a certification or approval body. It is a study draft and may contain errors. Do not use it as instructions for work on a job site or on live equipment. Always follow your instructor, your supervising professional, and current official references and regulations.
VoTechWorks program approval and accreditation are still in progress. Credentials are issued only by the certifying bodies named in each program, after their own exams.
What This Day Is For
Today is your full dress rehearsal. You will sit a timed integrated written mock exam covering all three credential families—PMMI Mechatronics, Siemens SMSCP Level 1, and FANUC CERT—under conditions that match the actual exam as closely as possible. You will then complete the full FANUC CERT performance sequence in the robot cell, scored on a NOCTI-style checklist. At the end of the day, you will meet with your instructor for a scored debrief and leave with a signed, written exam strategy plan. There is nothing new to learn today; this is about executing what you already know under pressure and finding any remaining gaps before they cost you on the real exam.
Exam-Day Rules and Conditions
During the written mock, treat the room as an actual testing site. No notes, no phones, no open browser tabs. A basic calculator is permitted. Sit at a single station and do not talk until time is called. The proctor will announce time at the midpoint and again five minutes before the end. When you receive your score sheet by domain immediately after the session, do not compare scores with classmates—use that time to review your own results quietly before the performance portion.
For the performance mock, all standard shop safety rules apply with no exceptions. Before you touch the robot or the cell, don the required PPE: safety glasses and any additional PPE specified by the cell's posted hazard assessment. Before any maintenance or setup step that requires entering the cell or defeating a guard, apply full lockout/tagout per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147—identify the energy source, isolate it, apply your personal lock, and verify zero energy state. Electrical work inside the panel is governed by NFPA 70E: verify absence of voltage with a properly rated meter before making contact. Machine guarding requirements under OSHA 1910.212 and robot-specific safeguarding under ANSI/RIA R15.06 must be confirmed in place before automatic-mode operation begins. No one enters the robot's restricted envelope while power is on unless the teach pendant is in T1 mode and you hold the enabling device—that is an ANSI/RIA R15.06 requirement and a critical checklist item.
Written Mock: What the Domains Cover
PMMI Mechatronics areas: Fluid Power; Industrial Electricity 1 and 2; Mechanical Components 1 and 2; Motor and Motor Controls; Programmable Logic Controllers 1 and 2. Each area is its own knowledge exam in the real credentialing process, so your mock score sheet will break out each area separately. Know your cylinder-force and hydraulic-speed formulas, 4–20 mA scaling, synchronous speed (Ns = 120f / P), slip, Ohm's law and power, gear and pulley ratios, and the five IEC 61131-3 PLC languages.
Siemens SMSCP Level 1 domains: electrical components; mechanical components and electrical drives; electro-pneumatic and hydraulic control circuits; digital fundamentals and PLCs. Expect questions on series and parallel circuits, drive fundamentals, ladder logic, and pneumatic/hydraulic circuit symbols.
FANUC CERT written domains: HandlingTool Operation and Programming, and ROBOGUIDE offline simulation. Topics include teach pendant jogging, coordinate frames (world, user, tool), I/O configuration, program creation and editing, and system backup procedures.
FANUC Performance Mock: The Full Sequence
You will rotate through the cell one at a time. The instructor scores you; observers score their own checklists to build evaluation skills. Complete these steps in order:
1. Pre-operation safety check — verify guarding, E-stop function, and teach pendant enable switch before energizing.
2. Coordinate-frame jogging — demonstrate jogging in world, joint, and tool frames at T1 speed with the enabling device held correctly.
3. Tool-frame calibration — use the three-point or six-point method to set a tool frame; confirm the TCP is accurate by rotating about the TCP and observing minimal tip movement.
4. Program creation — create a motion program using position registers, motion types (J, L, C), and appropriate speed and termination settings.
5. I/O setup — configure at least one digital output and one digital input in the I/O screen; demonstrate a controlled signal.
6. Automatic-mode run — cycle-start the program in AUTO mode from outside the cell with guarding confirmed; monitor execution.
7. Fault acknowledgment — respond to an instructor-introduced alarm, identify the fault, clear it correctly, and resume.
8. System backup — perform a controller backup to USB media, confirm the files are present, and label the backup.
A single critical error—entering the restricted envelope with power on and no enabling device, bypassing a guard, or skipping lockout before a maintenance step—results in an automatic checklist failure regardless of score on other items.
Scored Debrief and Personal Exam-Strategy Plan
After the performance mock, you meet individually with your instructor. Bring your domain score sheet and your performance checklist. Together you will:
- Identify any domain below 75% and assign targeted reading or practice before exam day.
- Review each performance checklist item marked off or flagged.
- Write a personal exam-strategy plan: which written sections you will answer first, your formula recall sequence (write key formulas on scratch paper the moment the exam starts), and your planned pacing (e.g., minutes per section based on question count).
- Confirm your performance task order and any technique adjustments.
Your instructor will sign the plan if you are cleared to register, or will document a specific remediation assignment with a follow-up date. Instructor sign-off is the final gate before you schedule the actual credentialing exams.

Tool-frame calibration (TCP)The process of teaching the robot controller the position and orientation of the tool center point relative to the robot's faceplate, using a multi-point method so the robot can perform accurate tool-tip motion.
ANSI/RIA R15.06 / ISO 10218The U.S. and international safety standards for industrial robots, specifying safeguarding requirements, speed limits in teach mode, restricted envelope control, and collaborative operation guidelines.
IEC 61131-3The international standard defining five PLC programming languages: ladder diagram, function block diagram, structured text, sequential function chart, and instruction list.
SMSCP Level 1Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certification Program Level 1, titled Certified Mechatronic Systems Assistant; covers electrical components, mechanical components and electrical drives, electro-pneumatic and hydraulic control circuits, and digital fundamentals and PLCs.
Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)The hazardous-energy control procedure required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147: isolate energy sources, apply personal locks, and verify zero energy state before any servicing that could expose workers to unexpected energization.
4–20 mA analog signalAn industry-standard current loop used to transmit sensor and control signals over distance; 4 mA represents the minimum (0%) process value and 20 mA represents the maximum (100%), allowing wire-break detection at 0 mA.
Synchronous speed (Ns)The theoretical no-load speed of an AC induction motor's rotating magnetic field, calculated as Ns = 120f / P, where f is supply frequency in Hz and P is the number of poles.
Worked examples4
1. A pressure-sensitive analog sensor outputs a 4–20 mA signal scaled to 0–250 PSI. The PLC reads a raw current of 13.2 mA. What pressure does this represent?
- Identify the usable current span: 20 mA – 4 mA = 16 mA represents the full 250 PSI span.
- Find how far the reading is above the 4 mA baseline: 13.2 mA – 4 mA = 9.2 mA above zero.
- Calculate the fraction of full span: 9.2 mA ÷ 16 mA = 0.575 (57.5%).
- Apply the fraction to the engineering-unit span: 0.575 × 250 PSI = 143.75 PSI.
Answer: 143.75 PSI
2. An AC induction motor is connected to a 60 Hz supply and has 4 poles. Its nameplate lists full-load speed as 1,746 RPM. Calculate synchronous speed and full-load slip.
- Apply Ns = 120f / P: Ns = (120 × 60) / 4 = 7,200 / 4 = 1,800 RPM synchronous speed.
- Slip (RPM) = Ns – actual speed = 1,800 – 1,746 = 54 RPM.
- Slip as a percentage = (54 / 1,800) × 100 = 3.0%.
Answer: Synchronous speed = 1,800 RPM; full-load slip = 3.0%
3. A pneumatic cylinder has a bore diameter of 2.0 inches and the system supply pressure is 90 PSI. Calculate the theoretical extend force.
- Calculate piston area: A = π × r² = π × (1.0 in)² = 3.1416 in².
- Apply the force formula: F = P × A = 90 PSI × 3.1416 in² = 282.7 lbf.
Answer: Approximately 283 lbf (rounding to three significant figures)
4. A motor produces 5 horsepower at 1,750 RPM. What is its full-load torque?
- Use the torque formula: T = (hp × 5,252) / RPM.
- Substitute values: T = (5 × 5,252) / 1,750 = 26,260 / 1,750.
- Calculate: T = 15.006 lb·ft, rounded to 15.0 lb·ft.
Answer: 15.0 lb·ft
The math in this lesson3
Learners scale 13.2 mA to pressure on a 0–250 PSI range.
