Full-Length Timed Mock Exams, Remediation, and Exam Registration Verification

Objective. Students pass full-length, timed mock versions of all three credential exams under proctored exam conditions and complete all administrative steps—registration, ID verification, and fee payment—required to sit the live credentialing exams.

⚠ Pending professional review

This lesson, its worked examples and its practice questions has not yet been verified by a licensed engineer or certified journey-level tradesperson or by a certification or approval body. It is a study draft and may contain errors. Do not use it as instructions for work on a job site or on live equipment. Always follow your instructor, your supervising professional, and current official references and regulations.

VoTechWorks program approval and accreditation are still in progress. Credentials are issued only by the certifying bodies named in each program, after their own exams.

What This Lesson Is

This is the final practice session of the program. You will sit three full-length, timed mock exams under proctored conditions, receive scored results with a domain breakdown, complete targeted remediation if needed, and finish every administrative step required to walk into your live credentialing exams. Nothing here is optional — your course completion sign-off depends on meeting all three requirements.

The Three Mock Exams

NIMS Machining L1/L2 Written Mock. The mock follows the NIMS domain blueprint, which weights topic areas such as measurement and quality control, materials and tooling, machine operation, safety, and print reading. The mock contains 80 questions delivered in closed-note, timed conditions. Your instructor will score it immediately and return a breakdown by domain so you know exactly where any gap sits, not just your total score.

Mastercam Associate Mock Task Set. You will complete a full set of CAM tasks timed to match the published exam window. You will work from part files, set up toolpaths, verify toolpaths, and produce correct output — the same skills the live Certiport-proctored exam tests. Computers must have a licensed copy of Mastercam installed. No help files, no instructor prompts once the timer starts.

Haas Certification Mock. Working on the Haas Simulator or a live Haas machine, you will demonstrate every machine-control competency on the mock checklist: powering up, homing, setting work offsets and tool length offsets, editing a program, running in single-block and dry-run modes, and completing a safe shutdown. Your instructor checks each step against the competency checklist in real time.

Sit all three exams in a single proctored block. Treat the room like a live testing center: phones away, no notes, no talking.

Safety During the Mock Exams

The Haas mock takes place at a real or simulated machine. Follow all shop safety rules without exception, even though this is a practice session.

A safety violation during the mock is treated the same as it would be in industry: the run stops and the incident is logged.

Remediation Block

Immediately after scoring, any student below the current published passing threshold on any domain enters the structured four-hour remediation block. Remediation is targeted — you only work on the domains where you fell short.

At the end of remediation, a recheck task confirms improvement. You must reach passing on the recheck to proceed to the live exam. Document everything in your personal remediation log — it becomes part of your exam-readiness portfolio.

Finalizing Your Exam Registration

Scoring above passing on the mock is only half of the completion requirement. You must also confirm every administrative step before your instructor signs off.

NIMS: Log into your NIMS online testing account, confirm your scheduled test date and site, and verify that your name on the account matches your government-issued ID exactly.

Mastercam Associate: Confirm registration through the Certiport portal or the authorized testing site your school uses. Verify the exam date, location or online proctoring setup, and any system requirements if testing remotely.

Haas Certification: Confirm enrollment through your school's Haas Technical Education Center (TEC) coordinator. The coordinator manages scheduling through Haas Automation's TEC network, so confirm the date and any site-specific requirements with them directly.

Exam-Readiness Portfolio. Assemble the following in a binder or a labeled digital folder:

1. Printed or saved mock exam score reports with domain breakdowns for all three credentials

2. Completed remediation log (if applicable)

3. Registration confirmations for all three live exams

4. A copy of your government-issued photo ID

Present the portfolio to your instructor for final sign-off. No portfolio, no sign-off — even if your mock scores are perfect.

The Day Before Your Live Exams

No new material to learn. Review your remediation log and weak-domain notes only. Confirm your exam time and location once more. Prepare your ID and any admission documents the testing center requires. Get a full night of sleep. Arrive early enough to complete check-in without rushing. You have put in 1,800 hours to reach this point — execute what you already know.

Key terms10

NIMS domain blueprintThe official document published by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills that lists every tested topic area and its percentage weight in the NIMS credential exam; used to build balanced study plans and mock exams.
CertiportAn authorized testing portal and network used to administer and proctor the Mastercam Associate exam and other vendor certifications; manages registration, ID verification, and score reporting.
Haas Technical Education Center (TEC)A school or training facility authorized by Haas Automation to deliver Haas-specific training and to schedule and administer Haas Certification exams through the Haas TEC network.
Proctored exam conditionsA supervised testing environment in which a qualified proctor monitors all candidates, enforces closed-note and closed-device rules, and verifies identity to ensure the integrity of the exam results.
Lockout/tagout (LOTO)A safety procedure required by OSHA standards that uses physical locks and warning tags to isolate hazardous energy sources — electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic — before anyone performs maintenance or reaches into a machine's danger zone.
Tool length offset (TLO)A value stored in the CNC control that compensates for the difference between the reference tool length and the actual length of each tool in the carousel, ensuring the programmed Z-depth is cut correctly.
Dry-run modeA machine-control mode that executes all programmed axis motion at a safe feed rate without engaging the spindle or coolant, used to verify a program's path before an actual cutting run.
Exam-readiness portfolioA collected set of documents — mock exam scores, remediation log, registration confirmations, and government-issued ID copy — assembled by the student and reviewed by the instructor as the final step before course completion sign-off.
Remediation logA written record maintained by the student that documents which domains were below passing, what practice or re-machining tasks were completed, and the recheck result that confirmed improvement.
Single-block modeA CNC control mode in which the machine executes only one block of G-code per press of the cycle-start button, allowing the operator to verify each move before the next one runs.
In class: Sit three consecutive full-length mock exams in proctored, timed, closed-note conditions: (1) an 80-question NIMS Machining L1/L2 written mock exam using the NIMS domain blueprint weightings; (2) a complete Mastercam Associate mock task set timed to match the published exam window; (3) a Haas Certification mock covering all tested machine-control competencies on the Haas Simulator or live machine; instructor scores all three immediately and returns results with a domain breakdown. · Use scored mock results for a final 4-hour targeted remediation block: students below passing on any domain complete instructor-assigned practice items, re-machine a tolerance-critical feature, or re-execute a Haas control procedure, then complete a short recheck task to confirm improvement before the course ends. · Verify and finalize all exam registration logistics: confirm NIMS online testing account and scheduled test date; confirm Mastercam Associate exam registration through the Certiport or authorized testing portal; confirm Haas Certification enrollment through the school's Haas Technical Education Center coordinator; assemble exam-readiness portfolio (mock scores, remediation log, registration confirmations, government-issued ID copy) and present it to the instructor for final sign-off.
Materials: Full-length NIMS mock exam (NIMS-provided or school-developed to NIMS blueprint); Mastercam Associate full mock task files; Haas Certification mock competency checklist; computers with Mastercam license; Haas Simulator or live Haas machine; NIMS online testing portal access; Certiport or authorized Mastercam testing portal; Haas TEC coordinator contact; personal remediation logs; exam-readiness portfolio binder or digital folder.
Check: Students must score at or above the current published passing threshold for each credential on the full-length mock exam AND have confirmed registration for all three live credentialing exams before receiving a course completion sign-off; any student below passing on a mock exam completes the structured remediation recheck and must reach passing on that recheck to proceed to the live exam.
