Surface-Mount Technology (SMT) Components and Soldering by Hand

Objective. The learner will hand-solder 0805 resistors and capacitors and SOT-23 transistors onto a surface-mount practice board, with all joints meeting IPC-A-610 Class 2 side-overhang and end-cap criteria.

What Is Surface-Mount Technology?

Surface-mount technology (SMT) places components directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB) rather than through holes in it. Modern electronics—smartphones, routers, network switches, and test equipment—rely almost entirely on SMT. As an electronics and telecom technician you will encounter SMT boards in the field and must be able to hand-solder or rework individual components safely and to an accepted quality standard.

Component Packages You Will Work With

0805 is a passive component package whose name describes its size in hundredths of an inch: 0.080" long × 0.050" wide. Resistors and capacitors in 0805 are large enough to hand-solder without a microscope, making them the standard learning package for SMT hand work. The two ends are called end-caps or terminations.

SOT-23 (Small Outline Transistor) is a three-lead package used for transistors, diodes, and small ICs. Its leads are on two sides and are closely spaced, requiring a fine tip and good flux practice.

0402, 1206, SOIC-8 are other packages you will identify in the sorting exercise. 0402 components are very small—0.040" × 0.020"—and are difficult to hand-solder without magnification. 1206 is larger than 0805 and forgiving for beginners. SOIC-8 is a gull-wing IC package with eight leads.

IPC-A-610 Class 2 Acceptance Criteria for SMT

IPC-A-610, Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies, is the industry standard used to judge solder joint quality. Class 2 applies to most general electronics and telecom products where reliability matters but the risk of mission failure is not life-safety critical.

For 0805 chip components, Class 2 requires:

For SOT-23 leads, the same bridging rule applies; the fillet must show visible wetting on the pad and up the lead.

Safety Before You Touch the Iron

The Tack-and-Flow Hand-Soldering Method

For 0805 and similar chip components, use a two-step process:

1. Apply flux: Touch the flux pen tip to both pads. Flux removes oxidation, improves wetting, and reduces the chance of bridges.

2. Tin one pad: Place a small amount of solder on one pad only, then let it cool. This is called a solder deposit or tack pad.

3. Place and tack the component: Using ESD-safe tweezers, position the component on the pads. Touch the iron to the tinned pad while holding the component in place. The pre-deposited solder melts and holds one end. Remove the iron. Hold the component still for 1–2 seconds until the solder solidifies.

4. Inspect alignment: Check side overhang and end-cap position before committing the second end.

5. Flow the second end: Apply flux, then feed a small amount of fresh solder while touching the iron to the second pad and end-cap simultaneously. Remove solder, then remove iron.

6. Reflow the first joint: Return to the first joint, apply flux if needed, reflow briefly for a clean fillet.

7. Clean and inspect: Inspect both joints under the 10× loupe. Check overhang, fillet shape, bridging, and solder quantity against the IPC-A-610 pictorial chart.

Tips for SOT-23 Transistors

SOT-23 has three leads. Identify pin 1 from the marking on the package or the datasheet. Tack one corner lead first, confirm orientation, then solder the remaining two leads one at a time. Use the drag method carefully: apply flux liberally, place a very small amount of solder on the iron tip, and drag across the leads. Wick off any bridge immediately with desoldering braid and fresh flux.

Rework

If a joint fails inspection—bridge, insufficient solder, or excessive overhang—you must rework it. Apply flux to the defective joint, touch the iron until the solder liquefies, reposition or add/remove solder as needed, and re-inspect. Never force a component with the iron; this damages pads.

Key terms10

SMT (Surface-Mount Technology)A method of PCB assembly in which components are soldered directly to pads on the board surface rather than inserted through drilled holes.
0805 packageA chip component package measuring approximately 0.080" × 0.050", commonly used for resistors and capacitors; large enough for hand soldering.
End-capThe metallized termination at each end of a chip component (such as 0805) that makes electrical and mechanical contact with the solder joint.
IPC-A-610 Class 2The IPC acceptance standard level applied to general electronics and telecom assemblies, defining minimum criteria for solder joint quality including overhang limits and fillet requirements.
Side overhangThe distance by which a component body extends laterally beyond the edge of its pad; IPC Class 2 limits this to no more than 25% of component width or 0.5 mm, whichever is less.
BridgingA solder defect in which excess solder connects two adjacent pads or leads, creating an unintended short circuit; always a reject condition requiring rework.
Tack solderingThe technique of melting a small pre-deposited amount of solder on one pad to temporarily hold a component in place before soldering the remaining terminals.
ESD (Electrostatic Discharge)A sudden flow of electric current between objects at different electrostatic potentials; can permanently damage SMT components and ICs, requiring wrist straps, mats, and ESD-safe tools.
Flux penA marker-style applicator containing liquid flux used to clean oxidation from pads and component terminations before soldering, improving solder wetting and reducing bridging.
FilletThe concave, smooth solder shape formed between a component termination and a PCB pad; a properly formed fillet indicates good wetting and mechanical bond.
In class: Component identification exercise: learners sort bags of 0402, 0805, 1206, SOT-23, and SOIC-8 components by package type using a 10× loupe and record on a parts ID sheet. · Tack-solder one end of 0805 components using the drag/wick method for alignment, then flow the second end; practice on at least 20 component placements with flux pen applied before iron contact. · Self-inspect using IPC-A-610 Class 2 SMT acceptance criteria: check side overhang, end-cap overlap, solder quantity, and bridging; mark defects on an inspection form and rework as needed.
Materials: SMT practice PCBs (0805 pads and SOT-23 pads), 0805 resistors/capacitors and SOT-23 transistors (multiple values), fine-tip iron tips (0.4–1 mm conical or micro-chisel), flux pens (no-clean), rosin-core fine-gauge solder (0.020" or 0.015"), 10× and 20× illuminated loupes, IPC-A-610 SMT pictorial chart, tweezers (ESD-safe), inspection forms
Check: Instructor inspects a minimum of 15 SMT joints; pass requires 13 of 15 accepted (≥87%) to IPC-A-610 Class 2. Any bridge defect is automatic rework-before-pass due to short-circuit risk.
