Domain-by-Domain Skill Remediation — Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

Objective. Students close identified skill gaps in each ACP exam domain by completing targeted hands-on exercises in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, verifying improvement through end-of-domain checkpoints scored at 75% or higher.

⚠ Pending professional review

This lesson, its worked examples and its practice questions has not yet been verified by an industry-certified professional or by a certification or approval body. It is a study draft and may contain errors. Do not use it as instructions for work on a job site or on live equipment. Domain-by-Domain Skill Remediation — Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

This lab is designed to close the specific skill gaps identified in your diagnostic assessment. You will rotate through three application stations — Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign — spending approximately 12 hours at each. The goal is not to review everything; it is to fix what your data says is broken.

How the Lab Is Structured

Each station presents instructor-prepared task files aligned to the exam domains for that application. You work through the tasks, self-check against the answer key, and record remaining errors in your personal tracking spreadsheet. After each domain block you complete a 20-item checkpoint quiz on the practice-test platform. You must score 75% or higher on every checkpoint to move on. If you do not reach that mark, you receive a one-hour remediation session and one retake.

This structure mirrors the way the Adobe Certified Professional (ACP) exam itself is organized: each exam covers a defined set of domains, and you must demonstrate competence across all of them, not just the ones you already find easy.

Photoshop Station — Non-Destructive Editing

The most heavily tested Photoshop concepts involve editing images in ways that preserve the original pixel data. The two primary tools for this are adjustment layers and smart objects.

An adjustment layer sits above the layers it affects and stores corrections — exposure, curves, hue/saturation — as instructions rather than permanent changes. You can turn it off, re-open it, or delete it at any time without touching the original image data. Always clip an adjustment layer to a single layer when you want to affect only that layer; use Alt/Option-click on the dividing line between the two layers to create the clipping mask.

A smart object wraps layer content in a container. When you scale, warp, or apply a smart filter to a smart object, the original data is preserved. To convert a layer to a smart object, right-click the layer thumbnail and choose Convert to Smart Object. After applying a Camera Raw filter as a smart filter, the filter appears beneath the smart object layer and can be reopened and adjusted at any time.

For the error-analysis drill, reproduce these operations from memory in a blank document: place a JPEG as a smart object, apply a Curves adjustment layer clipped to it, then apply Camera Raw as a smart filter. Compare your layer stack to the posted rubric.

Illustrator Station — Paths, Live Paint, and Export

The Pen tool is fundamental to the ACP Illustrator exam. Practice clicking to create straight anchor points and clicking-and-dragging to create smooth (Bézier) anchor points. Use the Direct Selection tool (A) to move individual anchor points, and the Anchor Point tool to convert between smooth and corner points.

Live Paint lets you fill enclosed regions created by overlapping paths as if they were separate shapes. Select all the paths, then choose Object > Live Paint > Make. Use the Live Paint Bucket tool to apply fills. Be aware that Live Paint groups must be expanded before you can apply certain effects or export cleanly.

For artboard export, use File > Export > Export As and check Use Artboards to export each artboard as a separate file. For screen graphics choose PNG or SVG; for print use PDF or EPS. The ACP exam tests whether you know which format is appropriate for which output context.

InDesign Station — Master Pages, Styles, and PDF Export

Master pages (called Parent Pages in current versions) define repeating layout elements — page numbers, headers, running feet — that appear on every document page assigned to that master. To override a master page item on a document page, hold Shift+Ctrl (Windows) or Shift+Command (Mac) and click the item.

Paragraph styles store a complete set of formatting attributes — font, size, leading, alignment, indents, space before/after — and apply them with a single click. Character styles store only the attributes you explicitly define and are used to format a span of text within a paragraph without overriding the paragraph style for the rest of the line. Both are managed in the Paragraph Styles and Character Styles panels. If a style name shows a plus sign (+), there is a local override; clear it by Alt/Option-clicking the style name.

For PDF export, use File > Export and choose Adobe PDF (Print) for press-ready output or Adobe PDF (Interactive) for on-screen documents. Run Preflight (Window > Output > Preflight) before export to catch missing links, missing fonts, and color-mode errors. The Preflight panel displays a green circle when no errors are found and a red circle when errors exist.

Working Safely in the Lab

Digital media labs present ergonomic and electrical hazards. Keep cables routed away from walkways to prevent trip hazards. Set monitor brightness and take regular short breaks to reduce eye strain. Do not eat or drink near workstations; liquid spills can damage equipment and create shock hazards. Report any damaged power strips, frayed cords, or overheating equipment to the instructor immediately — do not attempt to repair electrical equipment yourself.

Peer Teaching and Error Analysis

After each station, pair up with a classmate. The partner who scored higher in a domain explains one representative task step-by-step while the other attempts it. Teaching a skill exposes gaps that solo practice can hide. The instructor will circulate and correct any misinformation before it becomes a reinforced habit. Record every correction in your tracking spreadsheet so you can revisit it before the final checkpoint.

Key terms10

Adjustment LayerA special layer in Photoshop that applies tonal or color corrections as non-destructive instructions above the layers it affects, leaving original pixel data unchanged.
Smart ObjectA Photoshop layer container that preserves the original content of a layer so that transformations and smart filters can be applied and later modified or removed without data loss.
Smart FilterA filter applied to a smart object that is stored as an editable, re-openable instruction rather than a permanent pixel change.
Live PaintAn Illustrator feature that treats the regions formed by overlapping paths as individually fillable and strokeable areas, allowing intuitive color application across complex artwork.
Bézier Anchor PointA smooth anchor point created with the Pen tool by clicking and dragging; the resulting direction handles control the curve of the path segments on either side of the point.
Parent Page (Master Page)An InDesign template page whose layout elements — such as page numbers, headers, and guides — are automatically inherited by every document page assigned to it.
Paragraph StyleA named, saved set of complete paragraph formatting attributes in InDesign or other layout applications, applied with a single click to ensure typographic consistency.
PreflightAn InDesign inspection process that checks a document for production errors — missing links, missing fonts, incorrect color modes — before export or handoff to a printer.
Clipping Mask (Illustrator)An Illustrator object that uses the shape of the topmost path to define the visible area of the objects or group beneath it.
Domain Checkpoint QuizA 20-item scored practice quiz administered at the close of each application's lab block to verify that a student has reached the 75% mastery threshold for that exam domain.
In class: Rotating lab stations (12 hours per application): each station presents instructor-prepared task files aligned to a specific exam domain (for example, Photoshop — non-destructive editing with adjustment layers and smart objects; Illustrator — pen tool paths, live paint, and artboard export; InDesign — master pages, paragraph/character styles, and PDF export with preflight). Students complete each task file, then self-check against a provided answer key and note remaining errors in their tracking sheet. · Error-analysis drill: after each domain station, students pull up their two or three most missed item types from the diagnostic, reproduce them in a blank document from memory without a reference, then compare their output to a rubric posted by the instructor; any item still missed is flagged for a second pass. · Peer teaching pairs: each student picks one domain in which they scored highest and walks their partner through the steps for one representative task while the partner attempts it; roles then reverse. Instructor circulates and corrects any misinformation before it is reinforced.
Materials: Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign current version), instructor-prepared task files organized by exam domain, answer keys and rubrics for each task file, Certiport MeasureUp domain quizzes, personal tracking spreadsheet, Adobe Help documentation, domain checkpoint quiz forms
Check: At the close of each application's 12-hour block, students complete a 20-item domain checkpoint quiz on the practice-test platform; pass standard is 75% or higher on every domain checkpoint. Students who do not pass a checkpoint receive an additional 1-hour remediation session and one retake before the lesson is marked complete.
