Carousel & Multi-Frame Design

Objective. Students design a five-slide Instagram carousel as a cohesive set using a shared visual system, correctly sized and exported as individual numbered files.

What Is a Carousel and Why Does Visual Cohesion Matter?

An Instagram carousel is a multi-frame post that users swipe through, with each frame delivered as a separate image. The platform currently supports up to ten slides per post, but a five-slide carousel is a practical, manageable unit for educational or branded content. Because each slide is seen both on its own (in the feed preview) and as part of a sequence (when swiped), every frame must work independently and feel unmistakably connected to its neighbors. Achieving that dual requirement is the core design challenge of carousel work.

Visual cohesion is not decoration — it is communication. When a viewer swipes and the background shifts, the type changes size unexpectedly, and the color palette drifts, the brand signal collapses and attention drops. A disciplined visual system prevents that.

The Visual System: Three Non-Negotiable Elements

Brand palette. Choose two or three hex values from the supplied brief and use them only. Every fill, stroke, and tint should trace back to those values. Illustrator's Global Colors feature lets you update a swatch once and push the change across all five artboards instantly — use it.

Type system. Define one typeface (or a paired serif/sans combination) for three roles: headline, body, and label or caption. Lock those choices in a Character Style for each role. Consistent type hierarchy lets readers scan each slide in the same reading order, building the familiarity that makes a sequence feel like a set.

Linking visual device. This is the element that physically bridges slides — a shape, band of color, illustration fragment, or photograph that is cropped or positioned so it appears to continue from the right edge of one artboard to the left edge of the next. When a user swipes, the element seems to flow. Even a simple diagonal stripe or a repeating icon row achieves this effect. Plan it before you draw anything else; it determines your grid.

Setting Up Five Artboards in Illustrator

Open a New Document and set artboard dimensions to 1080 × 1080 px at 72 ppi in RGB color mode. Instagram renders at screen resolution; 72 ppi is correct for this output. Add four more artboards of the same size, arranged left to right, numbered 1 through 5. Illustrator's Artboard panel lets you rename each one (Slide_01 through Slide_05) so the export step maps cleanly to your file names.

Turn on a grid (View › Show Grid) or create guide lines at your margin and gutter values before placing any content. A common safe-zone margin for square social posts is roughly 80–100 px on each side, keeping text and critical imagery away from edges that may be cropped by interface chrome.

Place your linking visual device on a layer that spans all five artboards. Lock that layer once it is set. Work on a content layer above it for type and supporting graphics on each individual slide.

Narrative Arc in a Five-Slide Educational Carousel

A "how-to" or "listicle" carousel should follow a clear narrative logic:

Your 100-word deck note should name the intended audience, state the topic and format, describe the linking device, and identify what action the last slide invites.

Exporting Correctly Numbered Files

Use File › Export › Export for Screens (not Export As). Select the Artboards tab, choose PNG at 1x scale (which yields 1080 × 1080 px output from a 1080 × 1080 artboard), and verify the suffix pattern matches slide_01.png through slide_05.png. Double-check file names before submission — a file named incorrectly is treated as a missing file under the rubric.

Assemble the PDF proof using File › Save As › Adobe PDF with all artboards included and pages in order. The proof is the deliverable reviewers open first; it must show slides in sequence so the narrative arc and linking device read correctly.

File Management and Workstation Safety

Save working files to your assigned network folder after every significant change. Use File › Save (Ctrl/Cmd+S) frequently; Illustrator does not autosave by default. Name your working file with your initials and the project code so it is identifiable on a shared drive.

Physical workstation safety: keep cables managed and away from foot traffic paths. Adjust monitor height so your eye line meets the top third of the screen to reduce neck strain during long design sessions. Take a short break every 45–60 minutes to reduce repetitive-strain risk in wrists and hands. Report any electrical issues — sparking outlets, damaged cords — to the instructor before continuing work; do not attempt repairs yourself.

Connection to the Adobe Certified Professional Exam

The ACP Graphic Design Using Illustrator exam assesses your ability to manage artboards, apply color and type consistently, and export assets to specification. The carousel lab directly practices those competencies. When you set up five named artboards, apply global swatches, define character styles, and export to a precise pixel dimension, you are rehearsing the same workflow judgment the exam tests. Accuracy in dimensions and file naming is not pedantry — it is professional standard practice and an exam expectation.

Key terms10

Carousel postA social media post format containing multiple images or frames that viewers swipe through in sequence, each frame delivered as a separate image file.
Visual systemA defined set of design rules — palette, typography, spacing, and graphic elements — applied consistently across all frames of a project so the pieces read as a unified whole.
Linking visual deviceA graphic element (shape, band, illustration fragment, or photo crop) positioned so it appears to continue across the boundary between adjacent carousel slides, creating visual flow when a user swipes.
ArtboardA defined canvas area within an Illustrator document representing one discrete output frame; multiple artboards in a single file allow one document to hold all five carousel slides.
Global ColorAn Illustrator swatch option that links every object using that swatch to a single definition; editing the swatch updates all linked objects simultaneously across all artboards.
Character StyleA saved set of type attributes (typeface, size, leading, color) in Illustrator that can be applied with one click and updated globally, enforcing type system consistency.
Export for ScreensAn Illustrator export workflow (File › Export › Export for Screens) that outputs each named artboard as a separate file at a specified scale or pixel dimension, suitable for digital asset delivery.
Safe zoneA margin inset from the edge of a social media frame inside which critical content (text, logos, key imagery) is placed to avoid being cropped by platform interface elements or physical screen bezels.
Narrative arcThe logical progression of information across carousel slides — from hook through content to close — that guides the viewer toward a clear takeaway or action.
PDF proofA multi-page PDF exported from all artboards in order, used as a review document that shows the full carousel sequence and allows the instructor or client to evaluate the narrative and visual system together.
In class: Instructor demonstrates building a five-artboard carousel in Illustrator with a consistent grid, bleed-through visual element linking slides, and numbered frame logic; students replicate the template setup. · Students design a five-slide educational carousel ('how-to' or 'listicle' format) on a topic drawn from the supplied brief pool, maintaining brand palette, type system, and the linking visual element across all frames. · Export each slide as a numbered PNG (slide_01.png through slide_05.png) at 1080×1080 px, assemble a PDF proof showing all slides in order, and write a 100-word deck note explaining the narrative arc.
Materials: Adobe Illustrator CC; Adobe Photoshop CC; carousel template starter file (instructor-supplied); platform spec cheat-sheet; ACP Graphic Design Using Illustrator exam domain reference
Check: All five slides are 1080×1080 px, correctly numbered, share brand system elements, and contain a linking visual device; narrative arc is logical. Instructor reviews using carousel rubric; pass mark 75%.
