Objective. Students identify the major social platforms, their native content formats, and current canvas specifications used in professional production.
This lesson, its worked examples and its practice questions has not yet been verified by an industry-certified professional or by a certification or approval body. It is a study draft and may contain errors. Do not use it as instructions for work on a job site or on live equipment. Always follow your instructor, your supervising professional, and current official references and regulations.
VoTechWorks program approval and accreditation are still in progress. Credentials are issued only by the certifying bodies named in each program, after their own exams.
Every social media platform is a distinct publishing environment with its own technical requirements. A graphic or digital media professional who ignores those requirements wastes client time and budget: images get cropped at the wrong point, videos are rejected at upload, or content looks amateurish next to correctly formatted posts. Learning the landscape before you open a design file is a non-negotiable professional habit.
Instagram is a visually driven platform owned by Meta. Its core content types are feed posts (square, portrait, and landscape images or videos), Stories (full-screen vertical), Reels (short-form vertical video), and carousel posts (multiple images or videos swiped through in sequence). Instagram's algorithm has consistently favored Reels and carousels for reach beyond your existing followers.
Facebook, also owned by Meta, supports a broader mix: feed photos and videos, Stories, Reels, cover images, event banners, and paid ad formats. Facebook's audience skews older than Instagram's, which affects both content tone and design choices.
LinkedIn is the professional networking platform. Its content types include single-image posts, document posts (PDFs displayed as slideshows, called carousels by users), native video, and banner or cover images for profiles and company pages. Clean, legible typography and a restrained color palette tend to perform better here than high-energy visual styles common on TikTok.
TikTok is a short-form vertical video platform. All content is filmed or exported at 9:16 aspect ratio. Text overlays, captions, and audio are integral to TikTok content in a way they are not on purely image-based platforms. Video length caps vary by account type and are updated by TikTok periodically; always verify the current limit in TikTok's Creator Academy or Help Center before production.
Pinterest is a visual discovery and bookmarking platform. Its primary content unit is the Pin, and vertical images in a 2:3 ratio (for example, 1000 × 1500 px) consistently outperform square or landscape Pins because they occupy more screen space in the feed. Pinterest also supports video Pins and Idea Pins (multi-page story-style content).
Regardless of platform, every piece of social content shares the same anatomical layers:
Aspect ratio is the width-to-height relationship expressed as W:H. Common ratios in social media production include:
When a client supplies a horizontal logo lockup for a 9:16 Story canvas, you must recompose the layout — you cannot simply stretch or squeeze assets to fit.
Professional brand accounts plan their Instagram feed as a grid. Because Instagram displays posts in a three-column grid on the profile page, savvy designers plan color and composition so that adjacent tiles form a cohesive visual story. This is called grid strategy. It requires producing content in batches and scheduling it in a deliberate order.
Platform algorithms prioritize formats that keep users on the platform longer. Carousels encourage swiping (multiple interactions per post), Reels and TikTok videos autoplay and loop, and Stories with polls or questions prompt direct engagement. When a client wants brand awareness, algorithm-favored formats give organic reach without paid promotion. When a client wants conversions (clicks to a website or product page), a static post with a clear call to action linked in a bio or ad may serve better. Format choice is a strategic decision, not just an aesthetic one.
Social content work is screen-based, but ergonomic hazards are real. Set up your workstation so your monitor is at eye level and your arms rest at roughly 90 degrees at the elbow. Take short breaks every 30–45 minutes to reduce repetitive strain and eye fatigue. When using school computers, do not create personal social accounts on shared machines; log out of any demonstration accounts before leaving the workstation. Protect client brand assets and any unreleased campaign content — treat pre-launch posts as confidential.
Platform specifications change without notice. The only authoritative sources are each platform's official Help Center or Creator Academy. Bookmark them. Any printed handout — including the one provided in this course — is accurate as of its print date and must be verified before production begins on any real client project.
Answer each question, then check it. Nothing is recorded; this is your own practice.
