Objective. Students implement drill-through pages, bookmark-based navigation buttons, and a mobile-optimized layout in Power BI so the dashboard functions correctly on both desktop and a phone screen.
This lesson, its worked examples and its practice questions has not yet been verified by an industry-certified professional or by a certification or approval body. It is a study draft and may contain errors. Do not use it as instructions for work on a job site or on live equipment. Always follow your instructor, your supervising professional, and current official references and regulations.
VoTechWorks program approval and accreditation are still in progress. Credentials are issued only by the certifying bodies named in each program, after their own exams.
Power BI gives analysts three powerful techniques for building professional, user-friendly dashboards: drill-through navigation, bookmark-based tab controls, and mobile-optimized layouts. Mastering all three maps directly to the Visualize and analyze the data domain tested on the Microsoft PL-300 exam. Work through each section carefully before the hands-on activities.

A drill-through page is a detail page that a user reaches by right-clicking a data point on a summary page. Power BI automatically carries the filter context — the specific category, date, or product the user clicked — onto the detail page, so every visual on the detail page filters to that value.
How to set up drill-through:
1. Create a new page in your report and name it clearly (for example, Product Detail).
2. In the Visualizations pane with nothing selected, open the Drill through well at the bottom.
3. Drag the field you want to act as the drill-through key (for example, Product Name) into the Add drill-through fields here bucket.
4. Power BI automatically adds a Back button to the page. Do not delete it — users need it to return to the summary page.
5. On the detail page, add visuals such as a table of transactions, a bar chart of monthly sales, or a KPI card. All of them will respond to the filter transferred from the summary page.
When you right-click a data point on the summary page that contains the drill-through field, the context menu shows a Drill through submenu listing your detail page. Selecting it opens that page with the filter applied.
Best practice: Keep detail pages focused. A drill-through page that shows too many visuals defeats the purpose of drilling deeper into a single item.

Bookmarks capture the current state of a report page — which filters are active, which visuals are visible, and what slicers are set to. You can link buttons to bookmarks so that clicking a button instantly restores a saved state. This creates the feeling of tabbed navigation without using the standard slicer panel.
How to create a bookmark navigator:
1. Set your slicers or filters to the first desired state (for example, Region = East).
2. Open View → Bookmarks pane and click Add. Rename it East View.
3. Change slicers to the second state (Region = West), add another bookmark named West View.
4. Repeat for a third state (for example, Region = Central).
5. Insert three button shapes via Insert → Buttons → Blank (or use a shape). Label each one to match its bookmark.
6. With a button selected, open the Format pane → Action → toggle Action on → set Type to Bookmark → choose the matching bookmark from the dropdown.
7. In Reading View, hold Ctrl and click each button to verify the state changes correctly.
Tip: In the Bookmarks pane, right-click each bookmark and decide whether it captures Data, Display, or Current page properties. For filter-state navigation, capturing Data (the filter context) is usually sufficient; you may want to uncheck Current page so the bookmark does not force page navigation.

Many stakeholders view dashboards on a phone. Power BI Desktop includes a mobile layout editor that lets you create a portrait-oriented version of your report page without duplicating visuals — you are repositioning and resizing the same visuals onto a phone canvas.
How to build a mobile layout:
1. On the View ribbon, click Mobile layout. The canvas switches to a portrait phone shape.
2. A panel on the right shows thumbnails of every visual on the page. Drag visuals from the panel onto the canvas.
3. Use the 320 × 568 pt portrait canvas as your size reference. Stack visuals vertically rather than side by side.
4. Remove visuals that are too detailed or redundant for a small screen — a complex scatter plot may be replaced by a single KPI card.
5. Click Phone emulator (the phone icon in the toolbar) to preview how the layout will look on an actual device. Check that text is readable and visuals are not clipped.
6. Return to Desktop layout (same View ribbon button) to confirm your desktop version is unchanged.
Key principle: Mobile and desktop layouts share the same visuals and data. Changes to the underlying data model or DAX measures apply to both. Only positioning, sizing, and visibility differ.

Because dashboards drive real decisions, accuracy is a safety concern in data work:
Answer each question, then check it. Nothing is recorded; this is your own practice.
