Defense Preparation, Dry Run, and Final Presentation

Objective. Students rehearse and deliver a formal 30-minute technical defense of their capstone system before a panel, responding to live troubleshooting scenarios and examiner questions that map to PostgreSQL CE, Oracle DBA CA, DP-300, and CDMP Associate exam competency areas.

⚠ Pending professional review

This lesson, its worked examples and its practice questions has not yet been verified by an industry-certified professional or by a certification or approval body. It is a study draft and may contain errors. Do not use it as instructions for work on a job site or on live equipment. Always follow your instructor, your supervising professional, and current official references and regulations.

VoTechWorks program approval and accreditation are still in progress. Credentials are issued only by the certifying bodies named in each program, after their own exams.

Defense Preparation, Dry Run, and Final Presentation

The capstone defense is the culminating assessment of your Data Management / Database Administration program. It gives you the opportunity to demonstrate, in a live professional setting, that you can design, build, explain, and troubleshoot a production-quality database system. The defense format—a structured presentation followed by examiner questions and a live troubleshooting drill—mirrors the skills assessed by the PostgreSQL CE, Oracle DBA CA, Microsoft DP-300, and DAMA CDMP Associate credentials you are preparing to sit.

Structure of the Defense

Your defense runs approximately 40 minutes total. The first 20 minutes are your formal slide presentation. The remaining time includes at least 10 minutes of examiner questions and, separately, a 30-minute live troubleshooting drill that may be scheduled before or after the presentation at your program's discretion.

Your slide presentation must cover seven areas in a logical sequence:

1. Business requirements – What problem does your system solve? Who are the stakeholders and what are their data needs?

2. Architecture decisions – Why did you choose the database engine, hosting model, and schema structure you used? What trade-offs did you evaluate?

3. Security design – How are roles, permissions, and encryption implemented? What attack surfaces did you address?

4. ETL pipeline logic – How is data extracted, transformed, and loaded? Where are validation rules enforced?

5. Governance artifacts – What data dictionary, lineage documentation, or data quality rules did you produce?

6. Lessons learned – What did not work as planned, and what would you do differently?

7. Next-iteration improvements – Given more time or resources, what would you add or refactor?

Keep each section concise. Practice transitions so that you cover all seven areas within 20 minutes without rushing.

The Dry Run

Before your panel defense, you will conduct a full timed rehearsal with a peer acting as evaluator. Your peer uses the same defense scoring rubric the panel will use. After the dry run, your peer provides written feedback on every rubric section. Take that feedback seriously—it is your clearest signal of where the panel will probe. Common issues include:

Revise your deck and talking points based on the written feedback before the live defense.

The Live Troubleshooting Drill

The instructor will inject three faults into a copy of your database. You must diagnose and resolve each fault on-screen while narrating your reasoning aloud. Typical fault categories include:

Narrating your reasoning is as important as the fix itself. Evaluators are assessing your diagnostic process, not just the outcome. Resolve at least two of the three faults to meet the passing threshold.

Examiner Questions

After your presentation, the panel will ask at least 10 minutes of questions drawn from the four credential exam domains. Expect at least one question on each of these areas:

Answer directly and precisely. If a question touches something your system does not implement, acknowledge the gap and explain how you would address it. Panels value honesty and structured thinking over overconfidence.

Scoring and the Passing Standard

The rubric scores five sections: technical accuracy, documentation quality, communication clarity, troubleshooting performance, and response to questions. You must earn a composite score of 80% or higher across all sections and resolve at least two of the three injected faults to pass. A failed defense may be retaken according to your program's retake policy.

Professional Conduct and Safety Considerations

Although database work is office-based, standard data center and lab safety practices apply. Workstation ergonomics matter for sustained focus—adjust your chair, monitor height, and keyboard position before the session begins. Ensure that you are operating only on the designated copy of your database; never run destructive commands on a production or shared system. Follow your program's acceptable-use policy throughout the defense. Treat your credentials and any demonstration data containing personal information with the same care required by applicable data privacy principles—do not expose real personal data in your live demonstration.

Key terms8

Defense rubricA structured scoring guide used by the evaluation panel to assess each required section of the capstone defense, providing a consistent and objective basis for the pass/fail determination.
Fault injectionA deliberate introduction of errors or misconfigurations into a system—such as a broken constraint, a failed job, or a permission error—used during a troubleshooting drill to assess a candidate's diagnostic and remediation skills.
Foreign key constraintA database rule that enforces referential integrity by requiring that a value in one table's column match an existing value in a referenced column of another table; a broken foreign key constraint prevents inserts or updates that would create orphaned references.
Role-based access control (RBAC)A security model in which permissions are assigned to named roles rather than directly to individual users, and users are granted membership in those roles; this simplifies privilege management and supports the principle of least privilege.
Recovery point objective (RPO)The maximum acceptable amount of data loss measured in time; for example, an RPO of one hour means the organization can tolerate losing up to one hour of transactions if a failure occurs.
ETL pipelineAn automated workflow that Extracts data from one or more source systems, Transforms it according to defined business rules and quality checks, and Loads it into a target database or data warehouse.
Data governance artifactA formal document or record produced as part of a data governance program, such as a data dictionary, data lineage diagram, or data quality rule specification, that provides accountability and traceability for data assets.
Principle of least privilegeA security best practice that states every user, process, or system component should be granted only the minimum permissions required to perform its intended function, reducing the potential impact of errors or malicious activity.
In class: Prepare a structured 20-minute slide presentation covering business requirements, architecture decisions, security design, ETL pipeline logic, governance artifacts, lessons learned, and next-iteration improvements; conduct a timed dry run with a peer serving as evaluator using the defense scoring rubric, then revise the presentation based on written peer feedback. · Complete a 30-minute live troubleshooting drill in which the instructor introduces three injected faults (e.g., a broken foreign key constraint, a failed backup job, a misconfigured role permission) into a copy of the student's database; the student must diagnose and resolve each fault on-screen while narrating their reasoning aloud. · Deliver the final defense to a panel of at least two evaluators (one instructor and one industry or advisory board reviewer); after the presentation, respond to a minimum of 10 minutes of examiner questions drawn from the credential exam domain areas, including at least one question each on data modeling, security, backup/recovery, ETL, and data governance.
Materials: Defense scoring rubric (instructor-provided), slide deck tool (PowerPoint or Google Slides), live PostgreSQL environment with instructor access for fault injection, examiner question bank mapped to PostgreSQL CE / Oracle DBA CA / DP-300 / CDMP Associate domains, projection equipment, defense feedback form
Check: Panel scores each section of the defense rubric (technical accuracy, documentation quality, communication clarity, troubleshooting performance, response to questions); student must achieve a composite score of 80% or higher across all rubric sections and resolve at least 2 of 3 injected faults correctly to pass the defense.

Practice check8

Answer each question, then check it. Nothing is recorded; this is your own practice.

PostgreSQL CE — Data Integrity and Constraints
1. During your live troubleshooting drill, you run an INSERT statement and receive an error indicating a foreign key constraint violation. Which of the following is the correct first diagnostic step?
DP-300 / CDMP Associate — Security and Data Governance
2. An examiner asks why you chose role-based access control rather than assigning privileges directly to individual user accounts. Which answer best demonstrates CDMP Associate and DP-300 competency?
Oracle DBA CA / DP-300 — Backup and Recovery
3. Your backup job log shows that last night's backup did not complete. After confirming the error message, what is the correct immediate next action?
Oracle DBA CA / DP-300 — Backup, Recovery, and Business Continuity
4. A panel examiner asks you to define Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and explain how it influenced your backup strategy. Which response is most accurate?
CDMP Associate — Data Governance and Metadata Management
5. During your presentation's governance section, an examiner asks what a data dictionary contributes to data governance. The best answer is:
PostgreSQL CE / DP-300 — Security and Access Control
6. You discover that a user account has been granted the DBA role to resolve a temporary access problem and the grant was never revoked. Which principle does this violate, and what is the correct remediation?
DP-300 / Oracle DBA CA — ETL and Data Integration
7. An examiner asks you to describe one practice that makes an ETL pipeline idempotent. Which answer is correct?
Program Assessment — Capstone Defense Standards
8. The defense scoring rubric requires a composite score of at least 80% across all sections AND resolution of at least 2 of 3 injected faults. A student earns 85% on the rubric but resolves only 1 fault. What is the outcome?
